What is iTunes

iTunes is a free application for downloading, playing, organizing, storing, and buying digital media files such as music, videos, podcasts, tv shows, music videos, and more.  While iTunes is an Apple application it is is usable on both PC and Macs. Its popularity grew from intial implementation of the iPod MP3 player, the media stored and kept in iTunes can be played on any MP3 player.

What is iTunesU

iTunes U is a variation of iTunes for education.  As podcasts spread in popularity colleges and univerisities wanted to tap into that new medium that reaches out to students.    As colleges and univerisities entered the podcast genre Apple decided to create a space just for education, hence iTunes U. iTunes U uses the program iTunes and provides colleges and universities space to put their content for students and community access. When you visit the iTunes store you now see the new iTunes U link which takes you to the world of higher education on iTunes - including Paradise Valley Community College.

How can iTunesU benefit my teaching and learning?

iTunesU can house, podcasts, videos, and PDF documents.  Posting audio, video, or PDF lectures can allow you to gain back some class time through online lectures allowing you to free up some classroom time for more collaborative activities, conversations, etc.  Posting lectures or study notes can provide your students the opportunity to relisten to particularly challenging concepts presented in a lecture.

What and Why of Podcasting

Podcasting allows individuals to broadcast audio, video, and other multimedia files on the internet through subscription enabled programs such as blogs or iTunes.  Podcasts become more than just an audio file once they become avialble for subscription. Podcastin became populuar due to the cultural shift brought about by personal MP3 players that allow audio files to be downloaded and taken with you. View a presentation by Mike Ho and Jennifer Strickland on blogging and podcasting to better define both.

What and Why of Podcasting

There are many reasons people podcast.  One is to build and strengthen your listening audience.  Many political figures, stars, entertainers, etc. podcast to build loyalty, connect with their audience outside their normal communication paths and connect with younger audiences who might not otherwise listen to the podcaster.    In education podcasting can be used for a number of reasons.  Allowing students to learn about campus acitivities or opportunities, learn more about faculty, staff, students, and/or student life on campus.  Or allow students to revisit or re-experience course content.  It might also help promote courses or programs on campus.  For example, if an instructor uploads an audio podcast of a difficulty lecture students can download it and play it over and over again to listen and experience the content again for further review.

Can I get images, video or documents in a podcast?

Yes you can!  Your podcasts can become photocasts if you want to include images - they can become vodcasts if you incorporate video.  You can even include PDF documents to your podcasts if you want to give students handouts with your casts.

For examples of a photo cast visit our own PV instance on iTunes U and go to "Student Life"

For examples of a vodcast visit our own PV instance on iTunes U and go to "Biology 101 or Biology 102" and view any of Jane Marks vodcasts

PVCC and iTunes U

Apple essentially gives colleges and univerisities free space on their streaming server and access to the iTunes U infrastructure.  Not all colleges and univerisities have access as there is an application process and a great deal of legal logistics to work out.  Maricopa was given space on iTunes beginning in June of 2007.  The district colleges are working collaboratively and individually to get their spaces up.  We share best practices as best as we can and help each other with techinal issues.  Each college is responsible for their own implementation and some colleges are farther along than others.  Eventually there will be a Maricopa iTunes U launch page that will link out to the various college pages however right now only a couple of us have ours up and running for pilot testing.   PV has done an outstanding job jumping in and testing the waters.  Now we need you to bring in the crucial instructional applications!  http://itunes.pvc.maricopa.edu/
